Candle Safety and Burning Tips for Better Candle Care

Candles bring warmth and beauty to any room, but safe candle use ensures both peace of mind and a longer-lasting burn. Whether it is your favorite Allure candle or a new seasonal scent, these steps will help you enjoy every burn safely and efficiently.

Note: These candle care tips are written for jar candles. They may not fully apply to shaped or molded candles, especially smaller designs with a total burn time of around 2–3 hours.

Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

What to Do Why It Matters
Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6 mm) before lighting. Helps prevent soot, smoke and large flames.
Remove any debris or carbon buildup from the wax surface. Keeps the melt pool clean and allows an even burn.
Use a wick trimmer or nail clippers instead of long scissors. Gives a precise cut without digging into the wax.

Allow the Wax to Melt Evenly

Tip Details
On the first burn, let the wax melt to the edges. Prevents tunneling and ensures consistent performance.
Ideal first burn time: 2 to 3 hours. Creates a full melt pool and sets the candle’s memory.
Avoid extinguishing too soon. Short burns cause tunneling and wasted wax.

Burn Candles for the Right Amount of Time

Recommendation Why
Burn no more than 4 hours at a time. Prevents overheating and wick mushrooming.
Let the candle cool for at least 1 hour before relighting. Protects the glass and stabilizes the wax.
Follow label instructions for molded / shaped candles. Some shapes burn only 2–3 hours total and need special care.

Place Candles Safely

Do Don't
Place on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Do not burn on uneven or delicate surfaces.
Keep away from curtains and drafts. Avoid open windows and vents that cause flickering.
Leave 4 inches (10 cm) between candles. Do not cluster candles too closely.

Avoid Overburning and Finish Safely

Indicator Safety Action
Only 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) of wax remains. Stop burning to avoid glass overheating or cracking.
Ready to extinguish the flame. Use a snuffer or dip the wick gently to avoid smoke.

Store and Maintain Candles Correctly

Storage Tip Benefit
Keep candles in a cool, dry place. Prevents melting and scent evaporation.
Put lids back on after use. Protects wax from dust and preserves fragrance.
Avoid direct sunlight. Helps preserve natural wax color and scent.
